Somerville Primary School is situated about 55 kilometres, southeast of Melbourne on the Mornington Peninsula. Currently there are 260 students enrolled.
We are working towards and will become an accredited Professional Learning Community.
This involves our staff working in Professional Learning Teams with a strong focus on collaboration, results and learning. Our Professional Learning Teams ensure their core work is always referred back to these three key elements.
Our Professional Learning Teams centre their work around 4 critical questions; What do we want the students to learn? How are we are we going to know if they have learnt it? What do we do when they haven't and finally, what do we do if they already know it? Developmental Curriculum and Inquiry-based Learning are features of our curriculum.
Our strong commitment to improved student learning outcomes is reflected in our comprehensive student leadership program and our welfare structures. Restorative practice principles guide our discussions and enhance our philosophy of developing self confident, independent, caring and responsible students. Our strong relationship with the local secondary schools enhances our secondary transition program and also capitalises on the interactions and activities across all levels of our school. We also are proud of our early year's transition program. Our School Chaplain compliments our social and welfare programs working with parents, staff and students (individually and within the grades) As always, one of the aims of Somerville Primary is, whenever possible, to keep classes as small as we can for our students.
We encourage our families to be active members of our school community. An active 'Friends of Somerville Primary' group works towards improving parent / school liaison and providing expenditure for necessary resources as well as providing a social and information support role.
Our specialist programs include Music, PE, Art and Science. We provide varied and rigorous intervention programs across the school, utilising our own and external resources. We also have a dance program in the senior school, a choir and percussion group. Before and After School care is provided by an external company.
Our school community supports our commitment to environmental sustainability. Our children are very proud of their attractive and fun school grounds.
All buildings are air conditioned. Our well, maintained grounds consist of large playing fields, adventure playgrounds, hard-court areas and shaded passive areas. The School Council is committed to the continued maintenance and upgrading of the school's buildings and grounds with an emphasis on safe, stimulating outdoor areas.
Our school is committed to continually improving facilities and programs in line with the educational needs of our students and Department of Education and Early Childhood Development [DEECD] guidelines and initiatives. We will continue to source the best possible learning opportunities for our staff and children.
